The puppet theatre emerged, some decades ago, of its archaic limb. Today is affirmed as a complex scenic language, an ideal platform of crossing multiple expressions of contemporary art. A poetical, anarchical and imagetic language, in which the puppet, as the actors double, reveals itself like a powerful metaphor, of a man’s dreams, ghosts and passions. This workshop will be a special moment to think about questions related to puppet theatre, in an historical and contemporary approach, sharing the creative process and theatrical games.

João Paulo Seara Cardoso has training in sociocultural domain, in theatre and puppets. He attended the Institut Nacional d’Éducation Populaire and Institut International de la Marionnette, with masters Marcel Violette, Lopez Barrantes, Jim Henson and João Coimbra. João Paulo initiated his theatre activity and training in Teatro Universitário do Porto. He dedicated his research to Teatro Dom Roberto, a popular Portuguese type of glove puppets, having performed more than a thousand and five hundred shows. For the RTP, he created and directed children’s programs. He has nine children’s books published. He is the artistic director and founder of Teatro de Marionetas do Porto and has directed all the shows presented by the company since 1988. He created “Máquina-Homem/Clone Fighters” for the event Peregrination at Expo 98. He is also a teacher of Theatrical Interpretation in Balleteatro Escola Profissional.
